As one of the few institutions in the Southwest to combine education and exhibit programs with a research center and extensive collections, the Museum of Northern Arizona is known worldwide for its interpretation of natural and cultural history of the southwest, with particular emphasis on the Plateau region. Exhibits range from local culture and anthropology, the diversity of the Colorado Plateau climate, geologic models, fossils, mineral specimens, and the many changes the Colorado Plateau has undergone through millions of years of geologic and volcanic activity. In recent years researchers at the Museum have successfully excavated plesiosaur skeletons, an assortment of fossil fish and sharks, and a variety of invertebrates and plants. These collections include at least four new species of plesiosaurs and a new species of dinosaur. The website has a teacher resource page with workshops, programs and downloadable curriculum guides that cover subjects from rock formation to space science.
