The 115,000 square foot Putnam Museum of History and Natural Sciences gives visitors an opportunity to explore history and science throughout the world, with a particular focus on the Mississippi River Valley. The Museum has and 3D IMAX Theater and is home to over 160,000 artifacts and specimens. Its permanent exhibits include the interactive River Valley Discovery Room where visitors can touch a 200 million year old tree and look at fossils, among other activities, and Black Earth Big River where visitors can explore past and present habitats of the region by walking through a cave, looking inside a huge oak tree, and observing live fish in a 718 gallon aquarium. The museum has both in house and outreach educational programs for all ages, as well as educator workshops and programs for homeschoolers.
